The VIBE Research Lab Team gathered around the conference room on Thursday, October 24th to watch Columbia Mailman’s “Grand Rounds” series, featuring Linda Villarosa, journalist and author of “Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives and on the Health of our Nation.” The talk, titled “Understanding the Toll of Race and Inequality on Health” was incredibly insightful and relevant to the nature of our work. Thank you to those who planned and coordinated this much-appreciated event!

Members of our VIBE Research Lab had an amazing time at Academy Health’s 2024 Annual Research Meeting in Baltimore, MD. Our team presented posters from preliminary findings from our APPLE Cohort and POEM for Equity studies.

Our principal investigator, Teresa Janevic, presented results for our POEM for Equity research study at the Academy Health Annual Research Meeting on July 1, 2024! Thank you, Dr. Janevic, for contributing to the conference with your informative and well-designed poster, “Systemically excluded: States’ use of the Unborn Child Option and postpartum uninsurance rates among immigrants.”

Our Data Analyst and incoming epidemiology PhD student, Natalie Boychuk, presented key findings from our APPLE Cohort study! We appreciate your contributions to Academy Health’s 2024 Annual Research Meeting with your poster “Social Determinants of Recommended A1c Testing Among Postpartum Women with T2DM,” Natalie!

Frances M. Howell, our lab’s Research Project Manager, also presented two posters focusing on qualitative findings from our POEM for Equity study!

The first poster Frances presented was first authored by our collaborator Ashley Fox at SUNY Albany, “‘Where there’s a will there’s a way:’ Continuous coverage and the Medicaid unwinding in New York, New Jersey, and Texas.” The second poster that she took the lead on was titled “‘I’m calmer now that they’re going to give it to me:’ An examination of postpartum women’s experiences navigating healthcare systems with Medicaid.” Both posters attracted many curious conference-goers and sparked novel conversations with researchers advocating for postpartum equity! Wonderful job, Frances!

After a long day at the Academy Health Annual Research Meeting, our research team enjoyed a dinner out in Baltimore with Columbia colleagues Dr. Jamie Daw, Dr. Xiao Xu, and Columbia alum, Dr. Renata Howland! Amazing job, team!

Conference Season is upon us! Our data analyst, Natalie Boychuk, kicked off the 2024 conference season by presenting preliminary findings from our APPLE Study at New York City Epidemiological Forum on April 4, 2024. Way to go Natalie and congratulations on your well received poster “Results from a Population-based longitudinal cohort study: Social determinants of access to timely and regular glucose monitoring among people with diabetes.”

Dr. Teresa Janevic recently gave a talk on our APPLE Cohort study for Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s MFM Research Meeting!

The audience was super excited to learn about our mixed-methods approach particularly qualitative methods!
